The FCC says it's not their responsibility to oversee broadcast volume. If you've got a problem with the ads screeching at you, you're supposed to note the time and date of broadcast and the advertiser and then complain to the station that aired the ad. This seems overly tedious. It would seem that a simple guideline such as "commerical volumes are not to exceed program sound levels more than 5 db on average" might be a reasonable rule to enact and enforce. Why is the FCC so non-involved on this? Telling us to use our mute buttons every time commercials come on (and that's what the FCC site says) is ridiculous!

The commercials used to be slightly elevated. I always felt it was so you could hear the commercial from the kitchen. Now we have to set with the remote in hand cause the commercials are so loud it hurts. This is ridiculous!!!!! My next TV will hav smart sound.

I agree with you. I wish the FCC would spend more time on a problem like this other than wasting their time trying to figure out what's "indecent" or not and giving out fines. I liked your solution to the problem as well. It makes sense, that's why the FCC won't bother.
