For protecting DVD Lens ,can I copy DVD to Hard disc in DVD Recorder then watch?

For protecting DVD Lens ,can I copy DVD movies to Hard disc in DVD Recorder then watch the movie.my DVD recorder comes come with Hard Disc. have you tryed this ? BTW, I have terms to ask: Recorder with upscaling, ,with commercial advance, with TIVO, what do they mean ? Thanks

If the DVD is a studio movie or TV show, chances are it has some form of copy protection, and you won't be able to record it onto your DVR or a tape. Other DVDs should be transferrable.
