i would have to disagree with spectral one that carbon is the most abundant, but a little known side fact, there are actually small trace amounts of arsenic and gold in our bodies! Lone had a good answer too. That would amount to about (here goes my horrible math) i think about 48%, and there are millions of other elements too so this would have to be the majority over oxygen and carbon.

Most of the human body is made up of water, H2O, with cells consisting of 65-90% water by weight. Therefore, it isn't surprising that most of a human body's mass is oxygen. Carbon, the basic unit for organic molecules, comes in second. 99% of the mass of the human body is made up of just six elements: oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus.

1. Oxygen (65%)
2. Carbon (18%)
3. Hydrogen (10%)
4. Nitrogen (3%)
5. Calcium (1.5%)
6. Phosphorus (1.0%)
7. Potassium (0.35%)
8. Sulfur (0.25%)
9. Sodium (0.15%)
10. Magnesium (0.05%)
11. Copper, Zinc, Selenium, Molybdenum, Fluorine, Chlorine, Iodine, Manganese, Cobalt, Iron (0.70%)
12. Lithium, Strontium, Aluminum, Silicon, Lead, Vanadium, Arsenic, Bromine (trace amounts)

I agree with hydrogen, because there is at least 1 hydrogen atom connected to almost every carbon, nitrogen, or oxygen atom in our body. So hydrogen is most abundant by atom counts.
As for most abundant by mass, I would have to say water, since we are mostly water, and it is the heaviest of the atoms between carbon (12), nitrogen (14), and oxygen (16), and hydrogen (1).

Simply enough, the most abundant element in the human body is hydrogen. Most of the body is made up of water, and the water molecule is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The human body is composed mostly of organic compounds, and most organic molecules are composed of hydrogen and carbon atoms with various others for "flavoring" (i.e. nitrogen, oxygen, etc.). The human body is not unique in this regard as most matter in the universe is hydrogen that was created in the Big Bang.

The most abundant elements found in our body are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. There are also other important elements present, but in smaller quantities such as sulphur, sodium, potassium, sulphur, iron, calcium and phosphorus.

Hydrogen first, then oxygen, then carbon. Water is the most adundant substance, but the question was what elements.

well very few element exist on their own with the exception of maybe calcium in the body, but 90% of the body is water, each water has two hydrogens so probably hydrogen, also every organic thing is made of chains of carbon atoms, so your choice!!

Carbon by far. That's the origin of the term, "carbon-based life", that scientists searching for extra-terrestrial life look for, and also in fossils - Carbon-dating of long dead fossilized organisms. Then it's Oxygen and Hydrogen, then other elements in lesser amounts.
