The longer you leave it, the longer it'll take to defrag. If you do it once a week as people are recommending it'll be a quick and hassle free job. You can leave it longer quite safely but it's good advice. Also do the disc clean up BEFORE the defrag. There's no point wasting time defraging files you're going to be getting rid of anyway.

I would use Disk Cleanup about once a week.
I recommend that you check your Anti-virus status ALWAYS, but run the full scan once a week.
Check your SpyWare updates and run those scans at least once a week. But whenever you get an unusual popup, run the anti-spyware program to do a scan.
You should initiate a CHECK DISK about once a week too. Open My COMPUTER and right click on the C drive. Then pick TOOLS. Click on the Check Disk button. It will tell you that it will can, the next time you restart the computer. SO DO THAT.
You should do a Disk Defrag about once a week. I believe that you want to do this AFTER running a Check Disk. This probably should be done AFTER the disk cleanup, so you are testing fewer files. It just makes sense.
Good luck

There is a programme called "Diskeeper" which is basically an advanced version of the standard Windows disk fragmenter. This can be purchased as a download from the Diskeeper Corporation (I think the price is around £20 for a 12 month subscription). This programme has a "set it and forget it" mode whereby you can choose a day, time and frequency to run the programme so it can quietly run in the background as you use your computer or during the wee small hours when you are asleep.
They also have a trial version to see if you like the product should you want to buy it.

How often do you use your computer? I personally do not regularly defrag my hard drives, as I see little benefit in doing so. In fact in over two years use my HDs haven't even needed de-fragging (usually show as 1 - 2% fragged).
I use my PC on a daily basis and shift mainly large files around (if you deal with loads of small files then you'll probably need to de-frag more often).
Check maybe every month or so, and defrag if you think it needs it or you notice file access slowing down.
(A server at work requires daily de-fragging due to it storing call recordings, up to 2,500 per day generally under 1mb each)

bear in mind u might get a 'dont need to'
coz ur using a big hard drive and have lots of free space.
But the analysis will show red if needed, then do it no matter what. Around 1 / month is fine, because of microsoft updates etc etc. Also use that time to run anti-spyware.
Yahoo's toolbar is pretty good.

Disk Defragmentation depends on the amount of installing and uninstalling of programs you do. Clean up your (c:) drive every day.
Read Eclectic's easy to understand explanations about these processes here, http://4nuthin.blogspot.com/ , under, "Information Spaghetti" and "Don't Hire A Maid".

I normally defrag a computer about once a month. You also can have the defrag program analyze your system and that will tell you if you need to defrag at that time or not.
