Because of the hormone that makes your skin light or dark. The more melatonin you have the darker the skin. If you have light skin you should use a sunscreen or stay out of the sun. Or in about 20 years you'll look like a prune.

You have low pigment in your skin which often accompanies red/ginger hair. Your close ancestors were most likely European. I was watching a programme about genetics the other night and how races differ. Basically, red hair is the only trait that is concentrated in that part of the world, where as a lot of British people will actually have a mixed heritage from maybe further out. The gene for red hair is also recessive, so it's uncommon, which you probably know.

bobbys right about the melatonin,but you should have a higher resistance to both cold and pain than brown eyed dark haired people by way of compensation.x

Yeah i burn in like 5 minutes.......so I stay out of the sun to avoid freckles and burning........now I glow in the dark I'm so white!
Such fair skin......I don't know the science to it though........i better go now.....
