The newscasters on the radio today were discussing pulling out of Iraq, and that it would be in defeat. I am confused about this - didn't we depose Saddam Hussein? What would be considered "a win"? Why would we be considered "defeated" if we pulled out now?

I think there are two seperate issues here. Removing Saddam from power was the primary objective.. and pulling out the day after he was captured would be a viable reason to bring the troops home. It is the turning point and the "win" in that part of the equation. However now the 'what-have-you-done-for-me-this-second' media has shifted the story to the stabilization of Iraq for the purpose of creating drama.. and drama sells for the news just as well as sex sells for advertising.. Iraq apparently remains very unstable.. so we are not in a position to declare this objective a victory.. and there is no neutral ground in the media.. if you aren't winning the battle... you are losing / being defeated. If we got the full support of the United Nations and slowly separated ourselves as a country from this battle as Iraq found its own legs to stand on.. we could claim victory.. but it would probably be a draw, at best.. every future problem, like a terrorist attack or bus explosion or oil pipeline disruption would be blamed on our inability to maintain order or having left the country too soon.. so there is no way to win. And no easy or convenient way out of this situation for anybody involved. And that is drama at its best.. The media will create headlines from it for a long, long time.

If we pull out, Al Aaeda will flow in and tear the authorities aside. Then it really is going to cave in right into a cesspool of terrorism. the authorities isn't waiting to look after itself yet. holding all the factions mutually is complicated sufficient, then you absolutely have Al Qaeda helping to tear it aside? no longer reliable. ultimately, if we stay there lengthy sufficient and boost the borders properly sufficient, Al Qaeda will dry up sufficient so as that the Iraqi authorities can cope with it. it really is only a remember of waiting and staying power.

It would be a major defeat, an islamic theocratic government would take control of Iraq, which would be horrible in the scheme of what we are trying to accomplish. (Iran is a huge enemy, imagine another Iran.)
