...outside Scotland think England includes Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland etc?
SCOTLAND IS A SEPARATE COUNTRY OF THE UK.It is not, and never has been, part of England.
Sweet-cookie, you should be ashamed

Nobody who is British should think Scottish/Irish/Welsh people are English. They are totally different entities! I am sure the Canadians get just as fed up being called Americans - they are confused and yet are totally different countries! Stupid inaccuracies really make me M-A-A-D. By the way, I am English but have never thought of myself as being Scottish. I am as Scottish as someone from Scotland is English.

ps. count yourself lucky Sweet-Cookie did not call people from Scotland 'Scotch'!

Queen Elizabeth The Second is the current Queen of the UNITED KINGDOM, ergo she is the current Queen of Scotland as well as England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Sadly there's a lot of ignorance in the World, in a survey a few years ago, most Americans couldn't even point to England on a World Map.

From my own native language (german) I can tell you that misunderstandings like the one that you have just mentioned happen, because in German the term "England" is used for the whole of the main British Isle, i.e. Britain (excluding Northern Ireland). If people say that it is not necessarily an ignorant statement but possibly interference with their own language.

A similar example in English would be "Holland" which a lot of English speaking people use when they are really talking about the Netherlands. Holland is only a province of the Netherlands, just like England is only one of the 4 parts of Great Britain.

So - no offence.

Yes, most Americans seem incapable of distinguishing between England and the UK - I guess they think it's interchangable names, like the USA and America (which technically should be North America, I suppose). I guess this is why they also think it's possible to have a 'British accent' (can you imagine what that would actually sound like? RP meets Welsh meets Scottish meets Irish meets a bit of Brummie or Scouse!) although I think what they mean when they say British accent is English RP, like Hugh Grant or something.

If we really really want to get technical about it, you could almost say England is actually part of Scotland, seeings as after Elizabeth I of England died, James VI (or was it VII? I need a history refresher, obviously) of Scotland became James I of England...

I agree, us Scots are always being referred to as part of England. Sure, we are part of the UK but we have our own laws, governments and political parties as I'm sure Wales and Nothern Ireland do too. And I am not being racist at all as I have nothing against English people. English schools need to teach better geography lessons on the makeup of the UK (like I know I was when at school) to rid this ignorance. Anyway - what exactly does the Queen do and why is everyone making a big deal out of it? The royal family are an antiquated feature of the UK and are merely there as a tourist attraction nowadays. It's not as if she even decides anything anymore - except who to give her crappy mbe's to

I have answered this a few times ... Scotland is part of the UK/Britain. England is part of the UK/Britain.

Scotland is NOT part of England (they have a border!).

The same applies to Wales and Northern Ireland (obviously not the border for NI).

I think most people outside the UK couldn't care less about the internal differences within Britain, it is after all just a tiny dot on the map, no wonder it's difficult to find!!
Many people in the USA are descendants of English Irish Scottish Or Welsh and just as proud of their individual heritage as the people in Britain.
I am Scottish (by birth) I know the history of Britain and I know what a shower of Bastar** the English have always been.
I don't expect Americans to know all this, as I say Britain is just a speck on the world map !!
What do you really know about all the different countries of the world?? But you expect Americans to know all about UK!
Americans do know that Bush and Blair have some sort of unhealthy relationship, thats enough!!
So Ya Boo and Sucks!!

"Queen of Scotland" isn't on the list, as there isn't any such title at this point in history.
