Sometimes the first settlers meet and discuss what they will name their new town or community. They can name it after the leader of the group, or honor a common ancestor. Some choose to name it after the place they came from. Sometimes a ranch or farm may be established and then a town is built up around the farm, or in place of the ranch. It may have a native connection or have some historic significance. But the town council decides the official town name, and the residents are given a chance to vote or approve the name. And the name is recorded in the town's charter.

It used to be when places were formed they got names from the original settlers. I think now when a community is built it gets its name from the builder. It's not like people can go homestead or stake a claim anymore, so businesses do the naming now.
