"Family Room" was/is, an offshoot of DEN.

TV room, playroom, Den, activity/media center, all come from having a room seperate from the formal. Certainly that's more 60's and 70's originated.

A den, library, office, all at some point, needed Hype, and a push to add sellability to housing. "Oh LOOK HONEY there's a Family room right next to the Living room,,, let's buy this house."

Also the "Great Room" concept has both benefits and detractors. Certainly it's wide open, but dismisses most formality or separation.

The difference is wasted space. We walk thru our living room to get to the front door. I guess the room was for guests. But nobody ever uses that room except my Tzu. She lays on the back of the couch and looks out the window. From now on I will call it the dogs room. Every body else congregates in the den where the TV, fireplace, computer, comfortable furniture and rest of the family is. You are now so in trouble with my husband. I am going to redo that room into something we can use besides a hallway.

Agree-- the living room was more formal-- I refuse to furnish a living room-- so it's just there collecting dust-- and I intend to hang a door in the entry from the foyer to block it off from ???? so I made it my cat's gym-- it gets vaccumed and dusted every two weeks-- has their toys and boxes to climb in--
The den/family/'great room is for every day use-- TV, fireplace, sofas, close to kitchen and snacks--

Your family is not allowed in the living room and dead people aren't either.
No strangers or outsiders are allowed in the family room.
