Music...i think the music is more important than the lyrics. the music tells the mood...

Definately Lyrics LAST. I still don't know all the lyrics to many of my favorite bands... like Radiohead... who knows what the hell he's saying anyway or Tool and everyone tells me I should listen to the lyrics, but when I try to, I am swept away by the music that I can't focus on lyrics... unless I'm reading them... and even then if a good part of a song comes, I'll put down the lyrics and whip my hair around to the music. As far as answering the question, "what do you hear first?" it's hard cuz it depends on what I'm listening to. I hear HARMONY first (your #2 the band) sometimes, the bass is the fist thing I latch on to. Then RHYTHM... yes, even w/ Tool. Cuz I LOVE HARMONY. I CAN (if I want to) listen to an inner line (one particular instrument) and I like to do that with the Beatles cuz they have such rich Harmony. (And maybe cuz I used to sing Alto.... mmm inner lines are lovely.) But to answer the over-all question... I hear Music and ONLY Music, NOT LYRICS. If the music sucks like 80s pop (or today's pop) then I hear the lyrics simply because I'm not interested in the music. Strange, isn't it? Anyway, I call myself Lyric-Deaf. But it's party has something to do w/ being a lover of music.

I concentrate more on the words because if it is not appropriate, I am not listening to it and I try to tell my children the same.

I guess it would be the band...I listen to the beat, then I listen to the words.
