There are several things that can go wrong.
1. Dial-up connection did not completely log in.
2. Firewall does not permit IE to connect to internet
3. Yes, SpyWare can lock you out.
4. Your provider is lousy
On the SpyWare issue, get Ad-aware from Download.com. Use the search field and look for ad-aware. Scroll past the sponsor list and get Ad-aware.
After that, try SpyBot Search & Destroy. Again, get this from Download.com and search for SpyBot.
Good luck.

The inability to display your homepage doesn't neccesarily mean you aren't connected to the internet, although there could be issues with your connection.
It may be that the page you use as your homepage is down, or perhaps your security settings have changed, and won't allow cookies from the homepage to access your computer.

Could be your homepage has so much data to load that you dialup can't handle it therefore goes to it's default "page cannot be displayed".
If your homepage is "broadband enabled" there is no way your dialup is going to be able to handle it. Just too much data to transmit over a dialup connection.
Go to: dslreports.com and click on "Find Service" Enter your address and phone number and see if broadband is available in your area.
Hope this helps.
