It really depends what you are playing. If you like to play softer, classic/hard rock, go with ludwig, they sound exellent, but if you want more metal sound, or even island beats, go with pearls.

If you can find them, definitely Ludwigs. They by far have the richest sound of any drum I've played. Peavys and DWs are a close second. Look for a brand that has a heavy resonant shell. Even without heads It should ring slightly when tapped. If the drum is well made it will only sound better as you play and it "breaks in".
Fair warning, the drums that have the potential to sound the best are often the most difficult to tune.

i have a pacific but i like tamas and ludwigs cuz john bonham used those and he is the greatest so ther ya go!

pearl, they just sound better. better quality for the price
