The Medical field is a good source of income and job security. There will always be sick people. Also, government jobs often medical--they have good benefits.

Given that I am older than most of you (probably) I would have to say that (most) any job in the state or federal government. Once you are past the probation period, you will have GREAT benifits. Sick and annual leave, a lot of paid holidays, and you cannot be easily terminated without good cause. In other words, keep your nose clean and they can't fire you. You will not get rich, but there is room for advancement within the system, and retirement benefits are pretty nice.

There are two likely answers to your question. Depending on what is driving the "layoff." If it is due to a downturn in the economy (food service typically declines with decline in the economy) or business (such as buggy whip makers.) The other is due to outsourcing or offshoring - where the job is being done remotely by a low cost person (such as phone support.)
Face to face service (waste management to auto repair to high-tech repair to fuel delivery) are possible for layoffs, but are more stable.
My two cents - the only job secure from layoffs is owning your own business. Simple as pool service or auto detailing or ???.

There is no job where you are guaranteed a lack of lay-off. There are some industries or general job categories that do well, or where the chances of being laid-off are not that high.

The most secure job is being an undertaker. You'll always be needed as people die daily. But you need to have the capital to start up. Do you? It's a good job try it.

There is no such thing as a job security anymore. So, the only thing I can advise is to make your money work for you. Invest, buy real estate, create passive income which will help your own life security. Cheers.

Anything that cannot be broken down into repeatable steps. In other words, any position that requires you to be in the room with the customer and/or maintain a personal relationship. Healthcare professionals are excellent examples.
