because "soccer" is only called soccer in the US...everyone around the world calls soccer "football" or "futbol"

There is no proper name for the sport. It's called many different things, although most deal with "foot" and "ball." Depending on each language's variation of the terms, you get different pronunciations and spellings. The United States as well as some British call it soccer, but over the rest of the world, it's known as anything from Football to Voetbol.

It is a wrinkle in history that when leagues were formed in America to play football (a form of Rugby, or at least related) the European form which actually uses feet mostly was unknown. This happened after the industrial revolution, when folks had at least one day a week for recreation and local towns arranged playing spaces.

No.. it really IS football. Billions of people all over the world, (including the half a dozen in the US) are watching football right now. What is played in America is AMERICAN FOOTBALL. though I have no idea why they call it that at all. It should be called Handball or something. It is nearer to Rugby football but with shoulders.
