I'm in the process of getting a couple of letter of recommendations. I just graduated, so I don't have to many references. If I get these letter of recommendations, can I use them 2 or 3 years from now when I apply to grad school or a new job or does it have to be recent?

Yes, you definitely can.

The date of the recommendation may no longer be current, but it shows that even at a younger age, you were looked upon favourably, and this goes a long way to prove the consistency of your good character.

Do include them. They will help your future employer gauge the quality of your character in the absence of substantial work experience.

Good luck and all the best in your future endeavours.

Cheers!

This answer is a little long to really get into here. But for a quick answer, when you get reference lettrs from people. It's best to get them from people that you have worked either for or with that think you are a great person. NEVER, EVER have them put a date on the letter. Compose the letter WITHOUT a date. Why? let's say you are still looking for a job a year later and the person that gave you this fabulous letter is no longer working for that particular company any longer. If the employer YOU are now interviewing with looks at the date and asks you for an update letter you will NOT be able to produce one. A reference letter with no date is ageless. Do not get into the habit of giving what's not asked for. If you want to know why? email me direct at: recuit_mentor@yahoo.com

Whethere you are going to use the letter or not you are need those letters of recommendations. They will be good but still the newer ones are better.

Never the less you can use the current recommendations to comeb back to your professors and get a new letter of recommentations.

A good letter of recommendation does not expire. The person that wrote it did not send you a new one withdrawing the recommendation, did he?

More important is whether or not the letter is from someone that is relevant to the task at hand, i.e. someone from the field of endeavour you are trying to enter, or the type of job you are after.

Given your current position, these letters would be OK for a couple of years. after that your position will have changed and you would be better to get new letters.

They should be good unless the entity wants more recent.
