Wow. I haven't heard from him in a while. He's still going to be shareholder of Microsoft and instead he's doing "charity."
It sort of makes me sad...But Bill is doing something good now. He's nice like that.

He's not retiring. He has decided to turn the day-to-day operation of Microsoft over to others. He and Melinda will now concentrate their efforts on spending the billions of dollars they have funnelled into the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates will still have his finger on the pulse of the company and will continue as the Chairman of the Board (or is it President?). He's just going to do what he has always said he would ultimately do.... give most of his wealth to charity. That will leave him with only a billion or so of his own.

It's the thing to do. I doubt he's been that involved with the day-to-day activities of MSFT recently anyway. Philanthropy is something that lots of rich people engage in because they have no real use for all that money.

Rockefeller was much "worse" than Gates in terms of coercion and monopoly tactics, but no one really remembers that anymore since he helped out with charity so much after he finished up with his businesses. These day, people remember the Rockefeller Center in NY more so than his old businesses. I think it's nice of him to give back.
