Thanks for the responses. I do participate in class all the time and my grades are excellent in the class, but the constant "smart a.." remarks towards me are annoying and he seems that he wants me to respond to him to start a debate. The whole class seems to notice it as well. I guess I will just go back at him with "smart a.." remarks also.

Either you're the class favorite or she/he hates you. Depends on the type of questions she/he asks. Also, you could be the only person whose name she/he remembers.

What is the professor asking? Do you pay attention in class? Do you appear interested, or bored. If bored, maybe he/she is trying to get you to pay attention. If interested, maybe he/she likes your way of thinking. If it seems to be a big problem, be an adult and ask for a conference with this professor and be straight forward with this question! The response may suprise you!

Sometimes teachers are just trying to be fun - singling out one person in the class to tease becomes kind of an inside joke for the whole class. Sometimes they'll single you out if you look confused, bored, or extra-interested. And sometimes, the teacher thinks you look bored or interested, and it turns out you only *looked* that way - you were really just trying to blend in.

If the teacher seems to be doing it for fun (just joking around), he or she probably doesn't know you feel singled out - stop by after class and mention that you feel unformfortable, and I'm sure they'll stop.

It might be just your perception since all of us are ego-centric, some more so that others. If you are highly ego-centric you might perceive that the profesor is singling you out, when she is not. Keep a record how many times your professor singles you out and singles out other students, then you can be absolutely certain if she is.

Maybe deep down the professor sees some type of potential in you and is trying to bring it out, and if that means doing whatever the professor is doing to get it out of you they will. Or he/she could be just picking on you because he/ she can.

Maybe he has a crush on you! Or, maybe he sees that you are very intelligent and "singles you out" because he knows that you have the intelligence and aptitude to answer his questions???????? Could be anything, including your paranoia, THINKING he is singling out......could be????? Ya never know. To be sure, why not just up and ASK him????????? That's what "I" would do but I'm a very blunt person so............good luck with him regardless of what you choose to do. Take care!

I used to single students out for one of two reasons. Either they were not connected with the material - in which case I was trying to draw them out; or I saw a spark of potential there - in which case, again, I was trying to draw them out.

So, in what way is this professor singling you out?

IF you are uncomfortable about the interaction, you should see him after class and gently let him know how you feel.

I do this with students all the time, but if they don't want to play I'm cool with leaving them alone.

You probably stand out for some reason. Either that or you are paranoid.
