Last night I went to go feed my beta fish and he was gone. No trace of him could be found. Tore apart the fish tank, looked all around to see if he had jumped out. Nada. No sign of him anywhere. I know that fish jump out of tanks all the time, but this one never did. He barely swam around much less jumped. (he was lazy). Any clues to what could have happened.

No I don't have a cat......and I live with my boyfriend and he's out of town. It's not a regular fish tank, it's just a huge bowl with rocks and a plant in it.

Ok, the bowl isn't that huge, its a medium size wide body vase. with of course rocks on the bottom and a red plant in the middle. No lid, no cat, no filter, no siblings, no interferences. there's no furniture close enough for it to make it to. Picked up everything around the tank and probably within a 5 foot area. it sits on the bar. behind the bar is the kitchen sink, the only drain it could have gone down is the garbage disposal. anything else? let me know.

First of all, listen, everybody! SHE DOESN'T HAVE A CAT! THE "TANK" IS ACTUALLY A FISH BOWL! WITH ROCKS AT THE BOTTOM! WITH A LITTLE PLANT IN THE MIDDLE! geez, don't you people read?

Anyway, I don't really know... explain the conditions around the bowl, and I'll edit this post.

My only guess would be that he went into a filter. One of my baby fish went into a filter once and so I just retrieved him out. You say that your tank is round...Do you even have a filter? The only time my beta jumped out was when I was draining the water to clean it, so I don't think he jumped out. Well I guess you could check under the furniture just in case. I would check the filter.

Well for one beta fish don't like big spaces the would rather be happier in a small bowl. If you have them in a big tank they will just sit around on one corner of the tank. If you didn't find him at all anywhere he might have died and the fish ate him. If you get another beta just keep him in a small fish bowl he'll be so much happier.

This has actually happened to me before! I finally found the fish stuck to a newspaper (in between 2 pages) that was next to the fish tank. It had jumped out and stuck to the paper after it dried out. Poor fish!

Betta fish often jump and flop around this is how in the wild they would move from puddle to puddle so check for that - otherwise ask other family members, er.. and even the cat.
Bettas can live out of water for a while. So hopefully he wasnt out for long and if you find him can get him back in water - make sure it has a lid

Do you have any other pets? Cat maybe? I had a friend who kept her fish bowl on top of the fridge, but the cat still jumped up there and got the beta fish. =(

Could be that he flopped a lot & maybe fell down in the heat vent or something like that. I've had that happen before, too, but there were other fish in the tank that may have eaten the missing one.

He transported himself to another dimension, where he is living the life of an ancient samuri warrior. Happens all the time with beta fish, it just comes with the territory of having them.

(But all kidding aside, check the filter, or under whatever you have at the bottom of the tank.)

My Beta fish have never jumped out of the tank.
Do you have a cat, children or young siblings? How big is the filter on your tank?

You said you checked everything within five feet of the bowl's location. I had a gold fish jump out once and we found it , dead of course, under the couch that was twenty five feet away.
Good luck
