Oh absolutely! Look at all the prolific pirates in society: Cap'n Crunch, Captain Morgan, the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush! They're pirates, and they're doing really well! =D
You could also be Dracula, because I think Count Chocula isn't hurting for money.
Good luck, it sounds like you're on the way to a really interesting career of adventure on the high seas, matey! Arrrggghhh...

There are many forms of piracy nowadays. You can be a CD/DVD/Software Pirate and copy and sell them illegally.
If you're looking at becoming a real honest to goodness pirate, then yes that is also an option. First you'll need to get a fast boat with all the bells and whistles, able to outrun Coast Guard/Navy ships when needed. Anti-aircraft weapons wouldn't hurt either...just to ward off those pesky helicopters.
I'd think you'd want to limit your piracy to a specific coastal area, preferably South America, then you can do some smuggling as well (in case you're low on booty).
Piracy still does occur, but not to the degree it did last century.

Yes but you have to pass a special set or pirate exams. If you pass these with at least a level 3 ( 2 or even 1 being the best grades) you will recieve your captaincy qualification and your captains pirate hat but as a pupil , you must take on the roles of cabbin boy, and wear a bandanna.
The exams include sailing and fencing and as part of your key skills class you learn pirate people skills (being mean and smelly).
There is also a language exam as pirates sail to many foreign places and as part of your captincy you will learn the pirate code wich is usualy a mix of "aye"'s and "arrr"'s.
Once you have recieved all of your training, then you are qualified to sail the open seas!!! ARRRRR!

Given that real life, ocean going pirates attacked an oil rig last week, and that around the Phillipines (and other similar places) sea faring pirates are rife then yes it would still be viable to be a real life modern day pirate. I suppose you just need to ditch the cutlass and get an AK 47 and you're set. (Obviously you'll need a fast boat too, and probably a crew)

It was never a career and will never be a career worth the name. These days surveillance over open High Seas is easier with good satellite communication system with superior combat power available with the States to combat with maritime criminals. Hence, as compared to the medieval past , these days piracy is not viable.

Short answer: No. The police nowadays has faster boats, heavier artillary power to catch you before you start raiding any ship/boat. This career has very high risks.
Recommend you change your aspiration to become a treasure hunter to go after the lost treasures of the pirate ships.

There are still pirates operating all over the world. Whether *viable* or *career*... not sure.
The costumes ain't what they used to be and I'm told they have given up the rum and sodomy ( if that was what appealed )

Not really viable. Between freeware and the internet, its really difficult to be a self-starting pirate. Start out part-time and see how it goes.

No, well you shouldn't want to be a pirate (such as pirating music,) but if you want to be a cartoon or something like that - I guess thats an interesting career choice.
