A robot is a mechanical device that can perform preprogrammed physical tasks. A robot may act under the direct control of a human (eg. the robotic arm of the space shuttle) or autonomously under the control of a pre-programmed computer. Robots may be used to perform tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans to implement directly (e.g. the space shuttle arm) or may be used to automate repetitive tasks that can be performed more cheaply by a robot than by the employment of a human (e.g. automobile production; doctor).
The word robot is also used to describe an intelligent mechanical device ( machine ) in the form of a human. This form of robot (culturally referred to as androids) is common in science fiction stories. However, such robots are yet to become common-place in reality and development is yet required in the field of artificial intelligence before they approach the robots of sci-fi.
Finally, bots are named after the word robot because they perform mundane, repetitive tasks.
SO.....
Robots will not take over

People have been predicting that computers will take over the world since the 1960s. The movie 2001 depicted a deranged intelligent computer named HAL killing astronauts on a space ship bound for Jupiter. 2029 may seem comfortable far in the future for big changes that we cannot predict to occur, but back in the 1960s, the year 2001 seemed that way too. Well, here we are in 2006 and no computers have shown any intelligence yet. Amazing computational ability, yes, but self awareness or ability to do simple things like see and hear and reason, no.

Robots will probably become more prominent and useful in our lives but I don't think they will take over the world (as in the Matrix) by 2029. The human is a remarkable organism. It will take a fairly sophisticated machine to master us.
I'd be more worried that humans will do themselves in by 2029 - not with robots but with poor leadership, greed, malice, etc.
Of course there are always asteroids, tsunamis, and the like that also cause me more concern than robots.
Hopefully I'll still be around to witness 2029.
Great question.

Even though technology increases at such a fast pace, I don't know how soon machine will have the power to think like humans. Moore laws says Transistor density doubles every 18 months, Although we are still keeping up with that past we are coming close to reaching the point were they can't make transistors much smaller. Is it possible? I say less than 10% chance we will see anything like this in our lifetimes.

The Singularity is predicted to happen by that time........computers surpassing the intellect of humans. Robots don't nearly pose any kind of threat today, as their level of intelligence, currently, is almost insignificant. 2029 is way too soon to see fully functional androids walking around.

no i don't think so because we are smarter than that to make technology advance so much that robots have a "mind" of their own
