Hmmm...never thought about that. Probably because, while the holiday is intended to recognize all fathers, it is celebrated on an individual family basis. Even if children have more than one father or father figure, the gratitude, presents, attention is directly in a personal way to from chid/spouse (or from a parent sometimes in the case of grown children with children of their own) to father or father figure. Wow, did that even make sense. Hope you know what I mean.

Because each person is celebrating their (one) father, not all the fathers in the world. If I were to have a big party to celebrate all the fathers in the US, it would be "Fathers' Party" or whatever. But good point! It does sort of seem like you could say "fathers'" since all the fathers are celebrating!

It is actually both -- more properly, it would be Fathers' as the day belongs to all fathers. However, as each person celebrates it on a personal level, individuals call it "Father's" day. The masses speak poor English.

Because you would be celebrating your own father, singular, meaning the apostrophe between father and s, indicating singular ownership of the holiday.

I think it's because people don't have more than one father...granted, there does exist more than one in the whole world, but, well, unless you have two men raising you (which is perfectly fine and should be allowed; LET THEM GET MARRIED) you only have one father... therefore, father's day instead of fathers' day.

The second would be plural. You only have 1 Father. so it would not be plural.

Because when you say it, you're talking about your father, so it's his day.
