If you have Photoshop version 7.0 like you mentioned, it shouldn't matter if you learn on that instead of upgrading to CS or CS2. You won't notice much of the changes that were made.

Photoshop is a professional photo editing tool. One of the main things you have to understand is that painting is done in different "Layers." You can move objects around on each layer and then put all the layers on top of each other. For example, say you have a photo of a beach, and you want to do some shading on the sun. You can do the shading on a separate layer, and then choose to show it or not, or reposition the shading to your liking.

Photoshop also has lots of professional quality special effects, and isn't just a paintbrush tool... probably the most important tool in Photoshop is it's 'Magic Wand' tool... this selects everything of a specific color by just clicking on a region of the photo. You can use the tool to blur certain parts of an image or to choose areas to change colors... you can put color into an old black-and-white photo!

All the tools have lots of options, like with the magic wand you can choose whether you want it to select only one shade of green, or you can tell it to select all the shades of green available (or maybe some bluish colors too). This is called Tolerance.

You can add lighting effects and lots of other "filters". Lighting allows you to choose where to position the lights on a picture, in addition to brightness, etc. Photoshop is also great for creating logos and editing photos for use on websites.

It's definitely worth delving into, especially if you're interested in photography or really harnessing the great power of your computer's digital imaging capability.

I've been using Adobe PS for many years and I've yet to find out much that it will not do. Starting with Adobe Photoshop CS you can even do fully justified columns for newspapers.

The only con I've found is the price.

Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, Paintshop and other products are the same. The only different is the user. Just pick a product and master it. In this case, I suppose you already have Photoshop so go for it.
