Well they are not that rare. You shouldn't think it should happen to you. It did happen to my mother it wrapped around the babies arm prevented circulation. It also happened to my brothers wife. Wrapped around the babies foot. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. Its just happens

I personally know someone who lost a baby to a cord accident, however I also know over ten pregnant women in the past year who delivered beautiful healthy children. It is best not to stress too much during a pregnancy but also totally normal to worry. Discuss with your doctor/midwife your concerns and make sure you have an answer that you understand and feel comfortable with. Also, once you are far enough along to feel movement you should feel at least 10 every hour. If not then eat some cheese, drink some juice, lay down and count. If there are still not 10 per hour check with your healthcare provider (this doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong). Just remember they never mind discussing your concerns or checking the baby! It is their job and they usually enjoy it quite a bit!

Why do people insist on scaring pregnant women with these stories?
Cord accidents do happen but they are not that common. My baby's cord had two knots in it and he was perfectly fine. The knots are common but they move around so much in there that they are hard to avoid and very easy for them to get out of. And if it is around the neck during birth - don't worry, your doctor knows what to do.

A sonogram can normally pick this up. However, until you are towards the end of your pregnancy, it is possible for the baby to move around so much that they can wrap and unwrap the cord many times. A sonogram near the end of your pregnancy can catch anything abnormal. But nothing to really fret about, if your doctor has delivered a lot of babies, he/she has seen it all before. Three of my 5 children had the cord around their neck, one was really tight and needed some help to start breathing again but they are all healthy and normal.

there are some things that us pregnant ladies can't control....so, what i say to that stuff is "ignorance is bliss"! if i can't control it, then i don't want to stress about it.

i was born with the cord wrapped around my neck and who know why! it took a while for them to get me breathing, but i started screaming and i haven't stopped (as my dad puts it:).

so, just stay on top of what you can do to make your pregnancy happy and healthy and put that other stuff out of your mind.

feel free to talk to your OB about it, too! maybe they can give you some insight into the situation.

congrats and take care of you and your little bird!

It does happen But not in a frequency you should stress about. Just keep your dr. appointments and don't do anything dumb with your body (drugs, booze, physical strain, etc.) and everything should be ok.

Is this your 1st? Congadulations regardless.

You need to stop reading these kinds of books. When mother is stressed, baby is stressed.

Yes, worrying is natural. However, as long as you keep your Dr. appointments, you should have nothing to worry about. Congratulations.
