I have installed and uninstalled the modem both physically and through device manager. I know it has something to do with netzero.

I also have uninstalled netzero and used a regclean program to make sure it is GONE, and have physically removed the modem put into another slot, and removed it from the device manager. It finds the modem find, but not even hyperterminal can use it. I query the modem and it is not found.

Turn off the computer. Take out the modem. Turn it back on and completely remove the modem and netzero. Again turn it off and reinstall the modem. Turn it back on - you should get a "new hardware found" message. If not then the modem was not totally uninstalled. Try it again and this time remove all the registry entries for that particular modem. Once the modem is found, check the com port it loads on. Hopefully it will be com3 or com4. If it is com1 or com2 it may still work proved nothing else (like a mouse) is using that port. If it still will not work, buy a new modem. The old one may be fine but, unless you are willing to remove your OS and reinstall it, you have some bad entries that you cannot find that are preventing the old one from working.

Uninstall netzero and check your modems drivers to make sure the netzero installation didn't corrupt them. Make sure that netzero is compatible with your modem.

Uninstall netzero. Your modem might not be compatible with NetZero's software. :D Check their site for system requirements. --> http://www.netzero.net/signup/requirements.html?cf=wwwb1#pc

Then you should un-install it !!!
Maybe you're using a version which is not compatible with your pc configuration or maybe it's a corrupted version.
