It depends on where you go.
Cape Town is GREAT. It's more like a European city than a part of Africa. Make sure to visit the beautiful winery districts nearby.
Johannesburg and Pretoria are like any big cities - great if you stay away from the bad parts of town.
Be sure you go on a safari while there. Kruger Park is awesome. But there are many wildlife parks.

You're going to really enjoy it a bunch. We are just backpackers but loved every minute in SA and enjoyed renting a car and travelling around a multitude of countries for a couple months. Very easy to extent your trip to at least 6 months. Plenty of great backpacker places to start your stay in and then branch out. Most are great at putting together trips for you also. Don't me Garden Route, Krugar Park, Take the train to Vic Falls, and don't forget to try to surf in Durban.

I am from Cape Town and very proud if it. Try and spend plenty of time there because, whilst there is a lot to see and do, it is also a wonderful place to unwind and unwind and unwind some more. I live in London and am dreadfully homesick.

It is exceptionally beautiful! One caution.....almost 50% of the population is HIV positive so be careful with casual sex. in fact the recent mayor explained that he washed himself off after having sex ith an HIV positive woman......a lot of ignorance! But..it is wonderful and definitley worth visiting.
