a point on the globe is actually based on spherical coordinates. whereas, in the typical x,y,z axis, you have 3 dimensions telling you the height, length, and depth. in the spherical coordinate system, you have a radius (about 4000miles for earth) and 2 different angles. one is the angle from east to west (longitute) and the other is north to south (latitude). since the radius of the earth is constant, typically you will use only the 2 angles, longitude and latitude to location your position on the globe. if you were underwater or high up in the mountains, that's when you will have to incorporate your altitude along with your angles.
