I agree with you. I also live in North Carolina and we love our hockey down here. I say GO CANES GO. If they win the Stanley Cup, it will be the first big professional win for any professional sport team from our state. The Carolina Panthers almost won the Superbowl a couple years ago. Our NBA team needs a lot help right now.

The nice thing about the NHL as it is formed is that just about any team can win the Stanley Cup in any era. But to say that Canada with 6 teams and the USA with 24 teams are undermanned one need only look at history for the comparisons. Prior to expansion there were 6 teams in the NHL. 4 USA teams to 2 Canadian teams. Stanley Cups USA -16 Canada 29 (Toronto 13, Montreal 13, Ottawa 3) Today there are 30 teams 24 USA for a total of 42 Cups 6 Canadian for a total of 45 Cups. You are catching up. When you get too close we will start taking the whole thing serious again. LOL

If you follow baseball some, you might remember back in the early 90s the Toronto BlueJays won the World Series two times in a row.
I recall a few American sports reporters getting quite upset and calling for government intervention. Despite the fact that most of the team was players from the states, and all had played minor league ball somewhere in the U.S.A., American fans of the game were outraged at seeing a non-American World Series Champion.
But imagine if the BlueJays won it ALL the time for, like, a decade or so.
That's how Canada generally feels about hockey and the Stanley Cup. Canada produces the most and arguably the best hockey players, most players of various nationality earn their reputation playing minor league hockey in Canada, and Canadian fans are the best supporters of hockey. Despite that, the Montreal Canadiens were the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup, way back in 1993 (ironically, the same time the BlueJays won their second World Series)
Honestly, I don't think anyone in Canada (except for the Oiler fans) would be too upset if the 'Canes take the Cup. They tend to feel the sting more when teams that win it ALL the time like Detroit, Colorado and New Jersey are in the mix.

It's not that hockey fans DON'T want a U.S.-based team to win the cup, it's more wanting to see a Canadian-based team win the cup for the first time since Montreal won in '96. The previous economics of the game, coupled with a weak Canadian dollar and brutal tax structure gave the American clubs a tremendous advantages over their colleagues north of the border. I'd much prefer to see parity in the league when it comes to winning championships. While 24/30 teams are U.S.-based, the new economics in the NHL should erase any distinction between Canada- and U.S.-based teams but some people will always make it an "us vs. them" issue. Besides, a Canadian team is due for a win after such a long drought. Remember: Prior to '96, Canadian teams and American teams won the cups on an almost-equal basis. The poor economic structure of the old NHL gave the U.S. based clubs an obscene advantage. Now..hockey fans everywhere have the chance to see the BEST team win, not the richest.

As a Canadian I don't care who wins. The stanley cup is coming back to Canada anyway for about 55% of the time since over half the players in the NHL are from here.
As far as I am concerned the Canadian arguement of the cup should be in Canada is mute. The hockey hall of fame where the cup is keep is in Canada. Yes we as Canadians love the sport but there are places in the Northern US that are just as hockey crazy as here.
The only difference is that for us hockey is the only sport the dominates in our culture. So I think people here view it as national pride. When in reality we are cheering for the team based on location instead of based on the people of intrest on that team.
All that being said I would love to see a lot of players on both teams win a cup, but I think Ryan Smyth is the guy I really want to see with a cup because he personifies everything good about a hockey player. Heart, grit, determination, and team work.

National Pride
When the Blue Jays won the world series, Americans would have had the same feeling as Canadians when the Stanley Cup goes south of the border.

The Stanley cup should go to a Canadian team because it is a Canadian sport!! and the refs favor american teams wayyyy too much!! Plus there are way too many american teams! Plus the americans don't care as much as the Canadians do! That is why a Canadian team should take the cup!! Go Oilers Go!!!!!!

Well Canada will be PISSED because this will be TWO seasons in a row they BLEW IT. I hope Carolina wins but to be honest I have been picking them since the Eastern Finals for no real reason. I just thought they were the better team. I don't care if Canada wants the cup. I want a million dollars but I don't hear everyone on here saying I should get it. I don't care if Hockey started in Canada and it was their sport. How do you expect it to spread if you try to hog it? I know I got more intrested when my Penguins won the Cup back to back.

Because the fans in Caronlina haven't even had a team as long as Oilers fans have been waiting for another cup. The southern fans are just learning about hockey you don't really know what it means to be in the finals yet.

Personally, I live in NC right now and I always root for Canadian teams except the Maple Leafs...I hate those guys.
Personally for me, it's the national pasttime, not the national sport(lacrosse) and they've gotten screwed in the past due the economics of the game skipping over them. They couldn't hold on their good talent. And let's be realistic, Phoenix has a hockey team but not Winnipeg.....come on!!!
