Torey Hayden's books - One Child, The Tiger's Child, Ghost Girl, Just another kid, The twighlight children.

Behind Closed Doors by Jenny Tomlin

Sickened by Julie Greggory

The Kid and Moving on by Kevin Lewis

Richard B.Pelzer's A Brother's Journey - (You have so got to read this to see how the story continued after Dave left!)

The Little Prisoner by Jane Elliot

Sleepers by ...(Lorenzo someone!)

Just a Boy (Richard McCann

They're the first ones that come to mind here. I've read millions like the Dave Pelzer books but my mind draws a blank!

Love the Torey hayden books - she's a teacher who works with disturbed children. One child is an excellent place to start with her books.

P.S. Slightly diff genre but I also read The Burn Journals by Brent Runyon which was very touching, and Hannah's gift, by Maria Housden, which is the only nook to ever make me cry. Those two are not about child abuse but are both written the same way. You could also like Wated by Marya Hornbacher, about anorexia, and Girl, Interrupted, by Susanna Kaysen, about being institutionalised. Depends how specific your interest is. I love all the above books and enjoyed these also.

Child Called "It": One Child's Courage to Survive is David J. Pelzer's 1995 autobiographical account of his maltreatment as a child by his alcoholic mother, Catherine Roerva, who singled him out much more so from among her other children as an object of abuse.

The abuse gradually began when he was 5. By the time he was 9, he was variously starved, fed soap, forced to eat feces, burned over an open flame, and was invariably referred to as "an It" rather than by name. When he was 10 he was also stabbed. He was ultimately saved from his family situation when several school teachers called law enforcement. Child services then removed David and put him in foster care.

A 1997 sequel, The Lost Boy, details Pelzer's experience in the foster care system.

Have read all of the books mentioned above- recommend them all. There seems to be culture of books written about people's personal tragedies at the minute. Another good one is Sickened- not sure who by- cant remember- but its about a girl whose mother suffers Munchausen by Proxy.

Any of the books by Torey Hayden - One Child, Somebody Else's Kids, Murphy's Boy (to name three). She was/is a teacher of special needs kids who were abused or had medical or psychological conditions. The books are well-written and address her experiences.
