There are several possible causes of woodpeckers attacking your house including drumming (staking out their territory), looking for insects, or creating a nest.

My neighbor also had this problem and the birds stopped pecking at her house when she painted it. Originally it had a clear stain. My research backs this up.

I also found suggestions for mirrors and hawk silhouette mobiles as well as other ideas to deter the birds at these websites.

Good luck.

In a former occupation, I constructed homes made of northern white cedar.. very few problems accociated with this type of building material. Especially when a weather resistent wood stain had been applied as soon as construction had been completed. If you like the natural color of your home there are many types of color neutral stains available. I know it is not something that I would like to ingest. Perhaps the same applies to woodpeckers? But I would prefer not to risk unintentionally poisoning them.
Certainly sounds like a pesky bug related issue.. eliminate the little pests.. and the big ones will find a more worthy alternative.

Kja63 is right. Woodpeckers do not peck wood because they love to hit their heads against the wood. They are after insects they hear/smell/know are in or under the wood. Get rid of the bugs and they will go where there are better prospects.

Those plastic, fake owls will work in this case. Place it on the side of the house being damaged and move it every other day or so. I have had such good luck w/them I purchased one w/a rotating head. I have found it don't have to be moved as frequently.

Change your siding to vinyl or brick. Other than that I dont think there's any way unless you watch constantly and scare them away when they come.

You must have bugs in your wood home. Call an exterminator.

You might try one of those ultrasonic bird repellers, but it may drive other species away as well.
