I read this in an Indian newspaper, maybe The Hindu last month or early in June 2006

The actual definition is "A woman who has remained single past the conventional age of marrying". I don't fully understand what you are asking. Could you add more detail?

Well, the newspaper is wrong. The OED is not going to delete the word spinster from its contents. The OED is the most prestigious and most conservative and most complete repository of words in the English language. They would not even think about deleting a commonly encountered antique word such as spinster.
