The Greeks used the word "philea" to describe the sort of love between friends (without fringe benefits). It denoted a commitment to one another, "requiring virtue, equality, and familiarity."

As the movie "When Harry met Sally" explored, true friendship between the opposite sex is difficult at best and the physical attraction gets in the way. I generally agree that it is somewhat difficult to have an intimate friendship with a person of the opposite sex without erotic feelings getting in the way.

The Bible says that love is patient, kind, gentle, not envious, not boastful, not proud, not rude, not self-seeking, not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs.

If a friend loved me like that, I would say that would be true friendship.
