Instead of looking for pills to help you sleep try some relaxation exercises. Yoga can help you to relax and have a healthier body as well as some types of martial arts. For instance, at the end of my martial arts classes, we do some tai chi. We have also learned some relaxation techniques that are not related to tai chi. Here is one of them.
Lie on your back (this can be done in bed if you wish or on the floor) first try to relax all your muscles and try to imagine your body being heavy. Make sure your arms are by your sides and your legs straight out. Take long relaxing breaths using as much of your lungs as possible. Slowly breath in and out. Breath in and out about four times or a little more before you start the exercise. First, tighten all the muscles in your left arm all the way through your hand as hard as you can for three seconds then , relax it again. Breath in and out once. Tigthen all the muscles in your right arm all the way through your hand and hold for three seconds then relax. Breath in and out once. Next, tighten all your muscles in your right leg through to your foot and hold for three seconds then, relax. Breath in and out once. Do this to your left leg. Now, breath in and out three times (remember to breath slowly). Next, tighten both arms and legs at the same time as hard as you can for three seconds then, relax. While tighten all memebers at the same, try not to tighten up your core muscles. Try to leave your stomach and back areas relaxed as possible. This might be hard to do at first but you will get better at it with time.
Another way to relax (that requires a little more imagination) is as follows.
Lie on your back as relaxed as possible. Become aware of your entire body. Start at your toes and imagine a tingling sensation . Then imagine that tingling sensation go slowly up your legs and all the way up to your head. When you get to your armpits, run that tingling sensation down your arms and into your hands before you start to imagine the sensation going up your neck and into your head. That exercise was taught to my father when he was in the military beleive or not.
Try those and if still does not work, look up relaxation techniques on the internet. You should also try to schedule yourself to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time in the mornings. Don't sleep for more than eight hours a night. Take up a sport to help you get rid of that energy during the day. Good luck to you!

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse and i give all my patients the Herb VALERIAN or you can take a combination pill of Valerian and Passion Flower. They take a while to get into the system. They induce sleep by relaxing the body and promote normal sleep. You should also take a bath with aromatherapy oils added to the water. Essential oils to use are: 4 drops of Juniper oil - 3 drops of Lavender oil and 3 drops of Sandalwood oil. In a WARM bath. You can get all of the above at a health store.

Yes valerian root and melatonin are good choices to try. You can also try drinking some chamomile tea 30 min to 1 hour before going to bed. Also, try having someone give you a massage before bedtime, its nice and relaxing :)

I take Valarian (might be Velarian) a couple times a week. I know it is still taking something, however it is natural. It is from valarian root. I buy mine at the local organic store. I never feel sleepy when I wake up from it either. Very calming.
