To cover it to a depth of 2 inches, you need just about 0.4 cubic feet of sand. (Pi X D/2 X H)

There are a couple of things to consider. First how firm a bottom do you want. Next how long to you want to keep the pool.

Using plain sand for the bottom has a some drawbacks. It is heavy, it will shift over time and when the pool is removed getting rid of it is difficult. Many do-it-yourselfers and pool installers use vermiculite. It is natural (comes from volcanoes), is used a lot in gardening, and is very light. When the pool is removed it can be used in flower beds, etc.

Standard pool bottoms are between 2 and 4 inches. If you still use sand, an 18 inch pool would need about 20 lbs of sand per inch of base. Now if the pool is 18 feet in diameter then it would need 0.8 cubic yards per inch of base.

For the 18 foot pool, you will need to excavate the dirt to your desired depth (2-4 inches) and about 6 inches wider than the pool (total diameter becomes 19 feet). Fill the hole with the sand, wet it with a garden hose and tamp it until it is smooth and level.

If your pool is 18 inches in diameter one bag of play sand will be more than enough. I think you are probably talking about an 18 foot diameter pool. If that is the case you will need approximately two yards of sand to create a base 4 inches thick.

Have a great day!

It should only take about 1 gallon of sand, but I think that you will find that 18" is going to be abit hard to swim in unless you happen to be microscopic>? By the way, my pool is not 18" in diameter. It is 12' in diameter, and I used soil rather than sand. If it is fine, then it will work as well.
