about 10 years ago i was recommended a book and do not know the title or author. It was about a girl in the Australian Outback who met up and travelled with a tribe of Aboriginis. One part of the book talks about a dust storm (or a swarm of flies - cant remember) and they taught her how to deal with it by standing still with her head bowed till it passed. As i was on an educational trip through Africa and we were all from different parts I didnt know the girl who recommended it to me well and obviously now have no way of contacting her. Has anybody heard of this book?

it is called "Mutant Message Down Under". I love that book. And there is also a sequel called Mutant Message from Forever, also very good. The author is Marlo Morgan. I read that book 5 years ago, and just reread it last summer. It is certainly a book you'll enjoy, and it has an incredible message.
I see you can get it at Amazon for as low as 56 cents.

I think you're talking about WALKABOUT by James Vance Marshall, although it's about two children lost in the outback, not just a girl.

It was made into a movie in 1971.
