It really depends on the species. Mollies, Platys, and Swordtails are livebearing fish. The males have a modified anal fin that looks pointed, while the female anal fin is more of a fan. This fin is located on the ventral (belly) side of the fish behind the anus. In other species, the best method is the look at color differences. Usually males are more colorful and smaller in size.

It really depends on the species. Some species are indistinguishable. Others it is blatanly obviously. If they are very colorful and have longer and more elongated fins they are male and vice versa.

Some fish you can tell by their obvious colour and their reproductive organs. Others you have to 'vent' to be sure.
