You could use viniger or drop it in some coke then rub it with a cloth or maybe use fairy washing up liqiud.

Obviously it's not real gold because that would never rust. If it is rusting that means the plating has worn off and the base metal underneath is exposed. Some non-abrasive metal cleaners might work, but if you really like this thing you could get it replated.

Try a jewelry polish, but there is always the guys favorite weapon, WD 40 which contains an oil with a solvent to remove rust from metals. Use care and sparingly.

Go to a jewellers, you can buy gold cleaner (also available for silver and pearls). You dip the item in, leave for a minute, and it should come out shiny. Ask your jeweller for advice.

I've heard that toothpaste is good for jewellery, but have never tried it myself. Otherwise you can get sepcialist solutions from jewellers, to clean it.
