I've am reading Shantaram and I think it is a brilliant novel. But it purports to be a true story. Surely not ? All a bit far fetched, no ? I live in India and I have never heard, nor has anyone I know..of over underpants. Why does the author not thank a single person who appears in the book in the acknowledgements? On his website the author says the character of Qasim Ali Hussein would as a youger man have looked like SRK ( of course...who else ! )

Am I just being a spoil sport ?

Hats off to the author, regardless.

Gregory David Roberts has said it is semi-autobiographical. Which means that part of it is true... which parts, you ask? You'll have to guess. But it's true that Gregory went to prison in Australia, and he was on drugs, and he was in Arthur Road jail (in Mumbai) too. Yep, he stayed in a slum, did odd jobs, worked as an extra in Hindi films too. I guess he didn't acknowledge anyone because the experiences were his own, and you don't need to thank others for your experiences, right?
