Germany 1982. Carve-up match with Austria. Germans won 1-0 and both went through eliminating the Algerians. Also in the semi against France, German Goalkeeper, Toni Schumacher, blatantly injured(more like GBH) French player Battiston to prevent a French Victory. He didn't even get booked. Today he would have been charged with assault.

Well, Maradonna has the most high profile incident of cheating but the honour will have to go to Italy as the whole league was investigated for match fixing and corruption recently. Also in the world cup (1934) in Italy when Mussolini was in power even the refs` were bribed by the Duces`influence. This is still believed to have been a farce with the Uruguyans refusing to take part as holders to protest at Italy`s political standing.

You guys are stupid to say all these things about Maradona. The greatest cheats will be West Germany in 1982 when they played a got up game against Austria in order to eliminate Algeria. Also there will Argentina in 1978 when they beat Peru 6-0 to eliminate Brazil. Arg was the host , it was important for the ruling junta government for Argentina to win as it would garner public support. They had to beat Peru 5-0 to advance, before the match Peru suddenly changed their first goalkeeper without any reason & replaced him with an uncapped player. It was later learnt that the goalie was born & brought up in Argentina.

Bruce Arena - He is clearly cheating some worthy Americans of World Cup spots. The team we've thrown together this year is garbage.

I would say Maradona. Some people say he should have told the Ref he used his hand but to be fair, if that was an England player, would you want them to throw away a goal like that?

most people remember the 'Hand of God' goal by Diego Maradona of Argentina vs. England in World Cup1986. Doesn't make him any less the great player he was though.

I'm going to have to ditto just about everybody else in this forum and agree that it has to be Diego Maradona. It seems to me that some referees let an irrational dislike of England cloud their judgement.

The refs who let Italy get away with all their hacking in the 94 tournament.
They weren't football matches. They were street fights. Italy won by violent attrition.
