Hi there,
I will backup the answerer who recommended Prevx1. This is a relatively new program that is already proving to detect, protect and remove more malware than all leading security solutions combined.
Avoid AVG at all costs - it really is awful, now offering one of the lowest protection scores of all security programs, with newer viruses waltzing straight through their defences. It's free for a reason, and that's because it's protection is lacking. I recently installed Prevx1 on a friends computer who already had AVG - and Prevx1 went on to remove over 30 viruses AVG had completely missed. Quite shocking really and I wish people would stop recommending it...
If you are going to ignore this advice and go for a more popular security program - I'll give you some info on the latest protection scores. Kapersky is now quite far in the lead, ahead of Norton and Mcafee who are both pretty close together. However, as already stated - their protection scores are currently dwarfed by those offered by Prevx1.
You can read more about Prevx1 and/or download a Free Trial of their program which will automatically scan and remove all threats from your computer free of charge here:

Good Luck

and if you have a wireless router follow these tips,
1. Use WPA encryption (WPA-PSK) it's less crackable then WEP.
2. Make a passphrase that is upper & lower case and has some numbers thrown in there as well, again harder to crack.
some like mAkE1t5eCurE0rel53 and as long as possible.
3. Use MAC access control so only you or authorized PC's can connect (even if you do have encryption turned on)
4. Turn off DHCP use static addresses.

So for a loose receive it does paintings on anti virus and such. yet now i'm getting pop-united statesputting forward "setting up mistakes" like 5 cases everytime I turn my pc on. i tried Spybot, a similar AVG message wont bypass away. internet root, would not paintings both. i purchased $eighty 4 McAfee 5-in-a million, the AVG nevertheless pops up. So pay attention of loose anti virus downloads. curiously even offered anti virus/undercover agent ware gained't remove AVG loose. further be conscious: I study "classic" responce about SUPERantispyware and am down loading it now to ascertain if it may help me out. i allow you to understand. 36 minutes and counting..... situation nevertheless there! Reboot attempt made no ameliorations. i does no longer use SUPERantispyware!

most of the advice here is good, an easy start is to visit trendmicro.com and run housecall. avoid any free virus scanner, they're not as good. i like mcafee. slow on full system scans, but the active protection is great. spyware doctor and webroot sptsweeper are good also. the thing about trendmicros housecall is that if you're not pc savvy, it will usually knock out all the bad stuff. if you can afford webroot spysweeper ao spyware doctor, do yourself a favor and buy one. they will stop the kind of infection you have dead in their tracks everytime. so it won't matter what browser you use.

The best malware solution is to have a clean back-up ready to go.
All those scans and programs are great for removing one thing that just installed itself on your computer, but the point that a reinstall is required comes pretty fast.

Get McAfee VirusScan 2006. Update it and scan your PC.
For a free solution try AntiVir Personal Edition classic and AdAware SE Personal. Update and scan.
And start using Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer if you haven't. Its free.

Keep my words for that, for an infected PC nothing is like a good antivirus.
You probably now need a good virus scanner.
I rate them like this: -
McAfee
QuickHeal
Norton
Avast
AVG
Previx
Rootkit scanner
Stoccona antivirus

Go to http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and download "avast! 4 Home - English version (length 10.82 MB)". It's free and does a very good job at finding and removing viruses.
For spyware you can download for free Windows Defender at http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx.
I think Spyware Doctor is better though but it does cost $29.95. You can find it here. http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/
