I was 39 when I did in vitro. About 20% of the world's population gets pregnant. When doing IVF your chances increase a little. I was 39 years old and had a 39% chance of getting pregnant. I got pregnant with twins and lost one at 8 weeks and was able to carry the other and had a healthy boy who is 7. I was thinking of trying again and my doctor advised me that he would give me six months on my own and if I didn't get pregnant then he would refer me for in vitro again. I decided that I was lucky with this pregnancy and to have to go through everything all over again wasn't for us. I had never had any children before. I had been trying to get pregnant for three years without success.

The doctor's office or clinic can advise you on your chance of getting pregnant. I would be very thorough in checking out the clinic or doctor. You will want to know their success rate. I would strongly advise you having a very serious talk with your doctors as to the pros and cons? How much time and money do you want to invest? Is adoption an option?

Lastly I think you might want to make sure your husband/significant other (or unless your single) is on board. Having a baby is so rewarding but getting there can be very trying and big time stress on both. One or the other may feel like they have failed if they cannot produce any children. You may not be on the same page all the time but knowing that this is what you both want.

I would sit down and make a game plan. Decide what your course of action is going to be. If you know of any friends that have had IVF ask them if they would recommend that doctor or clinic. You will also need to have tests to determine that you have no problems that would interfere with getting pregnant.

If you do go through with IVF and you have more than one child think about how you would handle that situation. Are you going to be going back to work after the baby is born?

If having children is your goal don't give up. Its one of the most rewarding things life has to offer and whether you do in vitro or adoption reach for your dreams.

There is a 30-45% success rate, it all depends on health and how regular your cycle has been.
