I'm moving to vietnam for a year with my boyfriend. We've been there before and we waited till we got there to look for a house as they were cheaper and we could look around. Should we wait till we're there to find somewhere or do it back in the UK? Any other advice would be very much appreciated too.

I should have mentioned, its Hanoi I'm moving to. I've been to both Saigon and Hanoi and experienced to trouble whatsoever. I get alot more hostility and trouble in the UK!

i cant imagine how you would rent a home in viet nam w/o being there... but i guess thats "do able".. however hotels are SOO cheap ther you can stay at a mini hotel for a month or longer while you take your time and pick at a place thats just right for you.... i khow people who just stay at hotels for 6,7,12 months at a time... it depends on where your at. if you go to nha trang , check out the accomadation at the dong phuuong on nguyen thien thuat street,,you can make a good deal there... you may never leave. "johncharles".... is just a childish prankster that has no clue about viet nam!!!!

I am not sure where johncharlesr has got his info from, but Saigon is one of the safest cities in the world, there are plenty of western women who are renting houses without any problems. My suggestion for you would be to find somewhere when you arrive there. Now I am not advertising but my Vietnamese wife runs an agency that helps expats find accommodation, be it rented or buying, so if you need some help just get back in touch with me, i will give you the details to contact her and she can help you out.

becareful, vietnam can be very dangerous country for westerner who rent house there. Plan on being harassed by the police and have to pay money each month to them. Vietnam is no place for Western woman. If I was a western woman I would think twice about going to Saigon. Reports say the city becoming increasingly dangerous and hostile towards woman

My 5-storey house is for rent now in Saigon. If you want, just contact me!
Hmm... plz be hurry coz some English man has just asked to rent this house & we're negotiating the price. You can rent if the price is reasonable!...& of course, if you don't come here, how can you rent or buy a house ?
One thing I wanna tell everybody here is ... "Plz twist your tounge 7 times before saying something" - that's a Vietnamese idiom!

Probably best to find somewhere temporary to live before you leave the UK. That way you definitely have a base when you arrive in Vietnam.

Then, you can find somewhere more permanent at leisure, once you have settled in.
