Anytime I hear, or read a word I don't know, I look it up in the dictionary, and commit it to memory. This works for me, because I have a better than average memory. If you need to, write it down on a note pad any refer to it a couple of times during the span of a week, and see how your vocabulary improves.

reading is probably the best, listening to audio books can also help, if you are not used to reading too much start with newspapers (get away from glossy magazines as they tend to use the same vocabulary all the time) and move on to novels, for me Ray bradbury was a good start

Carry around a notebook and every time you see or hear a word that you don't understand, write it down and look it up when you get home and write down the meaning. Alternatively you could flick through the dictionary and pick a random word each day and try to use it in a sentence.
