Great question!
Romans did not really invent anything! By the time, they were accepting Greek issues and copied/ multiply them!
Thus, Roman gods are the Greek gods with different names, although, even the names were Greek, but not from the main dialects (Ionic, etc.)

There isnt a lot of evidence to show a 'link' as such, but there are lots of scholars who believe that the romans ripped off the greek gods. You probably already picked up the similarites between the names and characters. One of the best known is Hercules and herakles. Both are the same character, one is roman, the other greek. I have spent the last 3 years researching these, so thank u for giving me the opportunity to show off! If you want more info, there are some writers (mostly 19th century, when this stuff got really popular, but the infos still good) called Dodd, Lattimore, Guthrie. Ceram is another good one, or a more contemporary writer is Bettany HUghes, who has done some really interesting research. Hope this helped you! have fun:)

The Romans "stole" their mythology from different civilizations, the Greeks maximum of all. some memories are basic to both, at the same time as others were made up through the Romans. so that they are no longer *precisely* an same, yet they're nonetheless the gods "of" an same issues (information, conflict, elegance, etc.). the following is a itemizing of the Olympian (significant) gods, in no particular order. The names on the left are Greek, and on the right Roman: Zeus Jupiter Hera Juno Aphrodite Venus Hephaestus Vulcan Hermes Mercury Athena Minerva Apollo Apollo (same in both) Poseidon Neptune Hades Pluto Ares Mars Demeter Ceres Hestia Vesta (no memories about her)

The Romans adopted many of the Gods worshipped bt the Greeks after they had brought the Greek world into the Roman Empire. The Romans also adopted the architectural and artistic style of the Greeks in their public buildings, temples, and statuary.
Much of the learning and later writings of the Roman ruling class is based in the philosophical writings of the Greek philosophers. The Romans also employed many prominent Greek architects and mathematicians in their engineering endeavors.

The romans didn't have their own religion when they first invaded Greece. And since they liked everything Greek, they adapted their culture including their Gods and Goddesses. They just adapted the names a bit to make them Roman. But if you dig just a little bit like explore the stories behind these dieties, you will discover that it's the same stories, with different names.

The Greek gods were "invented" first. When Rome took over Greece, they took over the whole Greek mythos but renamed the gods with Roman names.

Actually, if anyone cares to take the time to really investigate you'll find quite a different answer.

Roman civilization was based on the Etruscan civilization in northern Italy. Rome was conquered by the Etruscans bringing their own values and beliefs with them, (That kind of goes without saying). The Etruscan religion was, in essence, very closely related to the Greek. So Rome didn't import a religion from Greece, they already had it.

i disagree with some of the other answers. yes, the Romans did copy many of their gods frm the Greeks. but they also invented some of their own. Satyrs are Roman as well as many other creatures.
