my messenger is trying to connect useing dial up and i have broadband how do i change that?

Go into messenger preferences>connections tab>>here you can change it...you get there by clicking Messenger at top left of main messenger box at left side

Open the Internet Explorer (IE) window > Tools menu > Internet Options > Connections tab (On the Internet options pop window) > (In the box) highlight the broad band connection you are using > click on the OK button > Close the IE window and then try using the messenger.
