Simply take the percentage i.e. 40% place it on the right of the decimal point and place a 1 on the left.
1.40
multiply the number you wish to add the 40% to for example
if I want to add 40% of 50 to itself :
1.40 x 50
equals 70
If you just want to find 40% then just place the 40 to the right of the decimal point and zero to the left i.e.
0.40
To find 40% of 50 for example :
0.40 x 50
equals 20
If you want to find your percentage amount and you know the percentage you multiplied by then :
percentage
--------------- x total = percentage amount
100
this is handy when trying to work out a net amount when you know the VAT rate. i.e.
17.5
------- x Gross amount = Vat Amount
100
or to simplify
7
--- x Gross Amount = Vat Amount
47
then simply take one away from the other to get the Net Amount

Take your starting figure and multiply it by .40
This will tell what 40% is. Then just add that to your original figure.
Simple.

Take those figures as 100%, then solve for 140%.
e.g. Let the figure you're working with be 80.
100% --> 80
140% --> (80/100)*140 = 112

Any number divided by 100 will give you 1% of that number. Just multiply 1% by the number of percent you want.
