Good -RARE-question.
I used to think that way too. Pivotal and all. For example try Big Country, or Ben Hur with no score (*), or Indiana Jones, as stated above. No go.
Except (one example) I have watched one remarkably good TV series earlier this year titled "Rome", which at one time required a 100 piece orchestra, choir, the lot, but worked out just dandy without a score at all.
Still can't get over this.
No question, music has always been a powerful mood-setter. Or, we would never have love songs, opera, etc.
(*) Rent Big Country a truly great movie with an outstanding score.

It's pivitol in my opinion. It adds an extra element to the film. I'm a huge fan of iconic scores. What would Indiana Jones be like without his theme?
