You could start reading the Harry Potter books. They are really good. They may seem childish, but once you get into them, you see its not so childish after all. Also, you could read "The Giver," "The Gathering Blue," and/or "The Messenger." They are very good books, but you really have to think about the book to understand it.
I hope I helped!

You don't exactly 'sound' 23... "i want to start reading real good stuff". What does that mean? Do you want to read the classics? Books on the NY Times Best Sellers List? I don't really know what to suggest to you. Go to the library, ask the librarian. Browse through some books. Maybe start with some books with pictures, I don't know. Don't start with really thick books, because chances are you won't finish them. What are you interested in: fiction, non-fiction, history, historic novels, biographies, animals, love stories? Go to the library. It'll be easier and there's a really great selection!
Heck, I'm -- , and I just finished reading the first of the Harry Potter series. See, it doesn't matter what you read, just pick something up and read. Have fun.

A little late, huh?
1984, by George Orwell.
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.
Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley.
Lord of the Flies, by William Golding.
Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad.
Dracula, by Bram Stoker.
The Portrait of Dorian Grey, by Oscar Wilde.
These are all hardcore classic novels, but once you get into them you can't put them down. Consult sparknotes.com if there's a part you don't understand fully.

Well if your not much into reading, I'm guessing your not really into deep novels like Faulkner and stuff. But there are adult books that are short and keep things interested. (mostly because its romantic/has sexual content) there are a few by a writer named Zane whom write stories as such.
