If your entire hard drive is already formatted as one partition, then yes, you would have to reformat the whole thing using Windows and would erase all the data.
However there are programs, like Partition Magic, that will let you divide an existing partition without losing the data. You would need to purchase PM or a similar program. (Off hand I do not know of a free program for doing partitioning.)

This will depend on the first time you create the partitions. If you use the whole HDD for one partition, you need to format the whole HDD or erase your data to create a partition. But you not need to format the HDD or erase the data to create a partition if in the first instance you used part of the HDD to create the partition and leave the other part for feature partitioning.

The process of partitioning a hdd only involve formatting after it is partitioned.
Assuming you have only Drive C: with Windows already installed is a tricky undertaking. It is safer to split an existing partition, say Drive D: into half.
To create partitions in your hdd without destroying data you will need to use specialist partition programs.
Using DOS Fdisk will destroy the lot and make everything disappear.
It will be easier to start from scratch. Backup all your DATA to CDs or DVDs and reconfigure your hdd afresh.
Use DOS Fdisk to create as many partitions as u want. Format all parititions with a MSDos boot disk.
Then install your Windows OS.

maximum OS installs will help you're trying this as area of the setup procedure, only position the OS set up disc of your determination interior of thechronic and commence the technique. For domicile windows you would opt to create the 50gb partition (assuming you want to position in domicile windows to c:) then once the set up is complete top click my pc > take care of > disk administration > top click the empty area > new partition then stick with the prompts. you would opt to reassign the cd driveschronic letter earlier to doing this in case you want the 2d partition to be d:you could attempt this from the disk administration video reveal through top clicking the cdchronic and clicking changechronic letter and paths
