no, really, socrates was accused of "refusing to recognize the gods recognized by the state" and "of corrupting the youth."
he was found guilty and given a cup of hemlock to drink as the sentence. socrates was essentially his own executioner

Because he was outspoken and denounced certain political leaders. Even today that still means the same thing; only difference is today they do it in secret. Actually, nothing has changed, today, as back then, they call us public enemy no 1 and wallop- we're done for. He took helmock to, a, make it more humane and, b, to stop them from having the pleasure of doing it.

Plato says he was forced to commit suicide by the citizens of his home city (he apparently annoyed them with by being an all-round smart-***). He drank the poision usually reserved for aristocrat suicides and died :(
