This is really two different questions, so I have two answers.
Absalom, Absalom by William Faulkner is the best book I ever read from an artistic standpoint. However, the book that had the most impact on my thinking at the time was Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand.

The Grapes of Wrath is the best book for me, because of the literary genius conveyed through his writing. The beauty, sadness, hardships, and content all have the flow and artistic value in a novel. To be able to show the human spirit and conflict within the pages is amazing.
However, I do have to agree that the Bible has had the most impact on me. The stories and proverbs and lessons are wisdom for life.

Without a doubt, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. It's a great book, as evidenced by its many fans here.
"The Five People You Meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albom is a simple story that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally gripping.

East of Eden by John Steinbeck.
Probably because it has so many resemblences to the story of Cain and Able. And, since I'm not a religious person, this story related a religious point of view in a way that I could relate to better. It really moved me.
